SPENCER LIST’S TAKE ON SUMMER’S KEY TRENDS
Off-beat sneakers, denim jackets and bright sparks of colour. See how the rising actor wears this season’s menswear must-haves.
Born in Florida, raised in New York, based in Los Angeles. Spencer List comes from a family of actors and models, and has – more or less – grown up on different film sets and photo shoots. Going from child actor to menswear fashion influencer isn’t a long leap, and the 19-year-old’s mix of vintage Americana and baggy ’90s staples has made him into one of the rising street style stars on the recently wrapped fashion weeks for menswear.
To celebrate the start of summer, we asked Spencer to pick and mix his favourite pieces from H&M and take them for a spin in his hometown. Photographer Adam Katz Sinding met up with him, and we sent through a questionnaire to find out all the things we had to know – from favourite food to childhood career goals – about the young actor. Keep swiping or scrolling to read the Q&A, and browse the slideshow above to see his take on the very best of H&M Man’s summer collections!
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
“At the moment, it’s Raf Simons – he's really changing the fashion game right now. His street style is where it's at. I love his use of colour and how he can make something so average look so cool.”
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
“I have a couple of style icons. Young Leonardo DiCaprio is definitely one of them. Most of the time, his style was really low-key but without ever being afraid to be bold, which I admire.”

“Another one is Tyler, The Creator – his style is on another level! It's cool how he's so young and already has his own brand. My favourite thing about him is that he doesn't care what anyone thinks about his style. He just wears whatever he wants. And I think it's kind of hard to pin down what exactly his style is. People don't give him enough credit.”
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
“I really don't have a particular style, I just like to wear whatever I think looks cool. I like denim jackets with sweatshirts, old school stuff and colours that pop. I try to be myself with my style; it's important to not try to be anyone else. Be eccentric, creative and just pick out stuff you like. If you feel that you look good in what you’re wearing, that's all that matters.”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
“My favourite place on earth? [Laughs] It’s my bed, no doubt. I know it's dumb but I love it. I just know as soon as I get to it that I'm done for the day and that's pretty much where I unwind and feel completely relaxed. If I had to pick another place I would say Chinatown in New York. Chinatown has everything you could ever want: arcade games, basketball courts, fireworks and Chinese food. I feel like a little kid in a candy store when I'm there.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
“Burgers! All day, every day.”
IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR APARTMENT IN A HURRY, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?
“Most likely grab a hat if I hadn’t had time to do my hair, and some cereal in a zip-lock bag. I don’t know why, but my mum used to pack my sister and I cereal in plastic bags when we had no time to eat breakfast before school, and it’s kind of stuck with me. Also, I'll grab a water. Stay hydrated homies.”

I can't tell you how many friends I've made from bonding over some cool shoes or a jacket.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
“It depends if I'm going out for a night on the town. Then I’m wearing a bomber jacket, some torn-up jeans and a pair of cool sneakers. If I'm just hanging out with the family or going out for a casual lunch, probably some cool sweatpants and a shirt or sweatshirt. Like I said before, a sweatshirt with a denim jacket can't go wrong.”

WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
“Everyone has their opinions. I think I'm really into the way you can express yourself and show off how unique you are as a person. I feel like fashion brings people together, and I can't tell you how many friends I've made from bonding over some cool shoes or a jacket. It doesn't matter who you are or what age you are, anyone can love fashion or be interested in it.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
“I would for sure live in the ’90s. I love the colours, some of the baggy stuff was cool, and I love that denim was incorporated in pretty much everything [laughs]. I think I would have fitted in really well in that era.”
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
“That's a tough one! My sweatpants. I wear them everywhere, whether it's a chill day or if I'm going out with my friends to a movie. Sweatpants are comfortable and fashionable depending on the ones you buy.”

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
“Ah, it feels like just yesterday. I was killin’ the art game. I actually had a piece in the Guggenheim in the first grade. I looked up to Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Tim Burton. I would go to museums all the time and I always felt very intelligent when adults would come up next to me and be reading about the same art piece I was reading about - haha.”
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
“I would want to meet James Dean. I just loved the vibe he gave off and I recently watched a documentary on him and learned so much about his life and how he pretty much gave up everything to go out and pursue his dream. He was very thoughtful and was always reading, and he really liked poetry. He wasn’t just the rebel to society, he was much more than that. Everything about him is the essence of cool. Sacrifices and hardships made him who he was and I respect that and think everyone should go through something rough to make them who they truly are.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
“I need Leonardo DiCaprio’s wardrobe and a New York pizza, preferably from Grimaldi’s by the Brooklyn bridge. I grew up there and would always swing by with my family when we had the munchies.”
